North Korean Summit

Americans have an ongoing problem in believing people in government are working in their behalf.  It is comforting to believe that when an American president meets with foreign leaders, he is trying to make a deal that benefits all citizens.  That is a fantasy.

The president represents powerful moneyed interests with abundant political power. Yes, these are largely American organizations, but genuine national interest is never part of the program.

The fear the government and its economist have is that you the consumer will pay too little for what you buy. In general terms, deflation is the poor man’s friend and inflation is the rich man’s friend. For decades, smart people have been been working feverishly to prevent deflation. Politics is always politically powerful people focused on getting what they want to the exclusion of anything else.

What would the president’s approach be if his only interest was getting a good deal for you, your friends, family and everyone who works for a living? The president would eliminate all tariffs and restrictions on legal goods and services entering and leaving the country. That is free trade. No agreement is needed since it is unilateral.

Free trade of the genuine sort creates an optimum for people who live and work daily. It could work to the disadvantage of certain corporations and wealthy individuals who use government to cheat the free market system. Overall, business prosperity would be optimized also. The only losers would be the parties who use political power to take advantage or everyone else.

When the president goes to a summit, it is for the benefit of some Americans. If you are reading this, you are probably not one of the ones who benefits.
